The hidden costs of “first to market”

Very few companies find a slice of Blue Ocean that remains theirs alone for very long, and once found the pressure to stay in that leadership space means bringing new products and services to market quickly. At YMMV we are very focused on supporting our customers’ journeys as they bring products to market which takes on an added layer of complexity when the actions of someone logging into a website or mobile application can have ramifications in the physical world.

Let’s start close to home, smart homes to be specific. Despite being in the consumer space for the best part of a decade, 40% of smart homes have some equipment vulnerable to cyber attacks. Certainly some vulnerabilities are due to people not following the vendor’s recommended installation proceedures but in other cases testing for all reasonably foreseeable cyber attacks is not completed due to time and resource constraints.

In addition to electrical, automation and radio engineers, YMMV Industrial staff includes cyber security professionals in the design phase of each project. Deployment assistance, regression testing and active testing of preventative and detective controls is also part of every customer engagement. While such measures do add time and cost to the final project deliverables that may initially make other offerings appear attractive, at YMMV we stand behind our recommendation for comprehensive testing for every cyber physical systems or solutions processing sensitive data.
