Training Gamification

The video game business generates billions each year in revenues and almost everyone of us at some point has played a portion of a game over and over until we make it to the next level. The computer doesn’t care how many times we hit reset and these are only virtual lives we are losing — a low risk venture for all parties.

Airlines learned this years ago, better the pilots learn in a simulator than with real planes but building a simulator for a modern plant can be quite an undertaking and fails to be effective with the first major change to the plant. Yes we need smarter plants, but we also need operators skilled in operating in these digital environments and we have taken some guidance we learned in our own internal cyber security awareness training provided by Syntax Security Solutions.

Many of the staff here at YMMV game in our free time, so building some training modules in the form of games just seemed like a natural fit. We are not competing with Minecraft or Fortnite, graphics are a bit retro but the underlying goals are to strengthen problem solving skills for those operating automated processes and handling alarms.

Our process engineers collaborate with professional educators to design custom training modules for our clients. Due to the proprietary nature of these modules they are not generally available to the public. While commercial games are primarily concerned about development cost recovery, we feel the potential intellectual property exposure through the process simulations warrants strong licensing controlled runtime.
